The Quiet Revival of the Mobile Tactics RPG

The Quiet Revival of the Mobile Tactics RPG

August 27, 2026 · Lena Vogt

Something shifted in the last couple of years. Tactics RPGs — the grid-and-turn kind — went from a niche to a genuine mobile category, and games like Emberfall Legion are the proof.

What makes them work is bite-sized battles. One fight is a satisfying puzzle you can finish before your tea goes cold. The story threads pull you between them.

The trap these games fall into is difficulty spikes. When a game suddenly demands a leveled-up squad, it usually means someone wanted you to grind. The best ones scale their challenge with your understanding instead.

If you've never tried the genre, start with something forgiving. Positioning and turn order are a whole new language, and it's more fun to learn it without a punishing wall in chapter two.
